Viriditas
Paintings of medicinal plants and anatomic impressions (65 x 35 cm):
Ogrody with green ink on canvas, partially sprayed. Since 1993 these green
paintings have become a patent of the artist (officially registered since July 1998).
He uses green, black and white ink on canvas. As Gassmann says, colour ist used
only in homeopathic doses and only at particular moments.
The painted herbal plants are not to be regarded in a utilitary way but rather
in view of their pure existence and there being within God's creation. But they
are nevertheless plants for healing. Thus their function in relation to the anatomic
paintings becomes evident. Here Gassmann takes on the spiritual orientation of
Hildegard von Bingen. Green stands for life and is the oldest symbolic colour,
not only in the ecclesial context. The medium of the colour and the painting
technique and process help me to understand the message.
